The shift to powertrain electrification got a boost in 2020 despite the adverse impact of COVID-19. Electrified car sales in China, Europe, the USA, and Japan grew by 49% year-on-year in 2020 to 3.4 million. Among leading carmakers in electrification, Tesla saw deliveries surge in 2020 to 499,550, just missing their 2020 target. Also, VW tripled electric car sales in 2020, from 45,000 last year to 134,000. But market competition in electric vehicles grew even stronger in 2020 pushing margins lower.
